About: Emma Cecilia Ferreira
Emma Cecilia Ferreira is a Colombian-born sculptor whose career spans over four decades and several countries, including the United States, Colombia, Costa Rica, and Spain. Her work is defined by a deep commitment to abstraction, material exploration, and a sensorial approach to form. Throughout her trajectory, she has developed a unique sculptural language that invites viewers to engage with movement, silence, and space on their own terms.
Ferreira began her formal studies in New York, graduating cum laude in Sculpture from Nazareth College in 1984 and later continuing at the Art Students League of Manhattan. Early in her career, she experimented with ceramics and metalwork, gradually moving from figurative expression to a freer, abstract vocabulary. Her work often avoids titles, allowing each piece to stand open to personal interpretation and emotional resonance.
Her sculptures — made from wood, metal, resin, and fiberglass — embody a tactile dialogue between shape and meaning. Ferreira’s creative process is meditative and deeply connected to place. From the Sabana de Bogotá to the lush tropics of Costa Rica, and now the quiet landscapes of Spain, her studios have always been sanctuaries for sustained exploration and formal refinement.
Ferreira’s work has been widely exhibited and is part of numerous private and institutional collections throughout Latin America and beyond. Her large-format pieces are also featured in public spaces, reflecting her belief in art as a form of communal dialogue. Today, working between Madrid and Pinilla Ambroz, she continues to push the boundaries of sculptural language, offering forms that speak to transformation, memory, and the power of abstraction.
